One of the biggest challenges for commercial transportation is cargo and fuel theft from untrustworthy employees and thieves. Worldwide, tens of billions of dollars are lost per year to these practices. Transportation firms around the world are constantly trying new ways to diminish theft; nevertheless, criminals have found ways to circumvent cargo and fuel security efforts.
A startup company in Austin, Texas, took the challenge of creating a method to secure commercial transportation. The company, Nuve, founded by Antonio Arocha, with the help of Elom Tsogbe, both University of Texas at Austin graduates; applies modern technology to create hardware sensors and smart locks as well as specialized software to monitor and take action against asset theft.
So how is Nuve different from other asset protection services? Traditional asset protection services rely mostly on GPS tracking of commercial vehicles. This is useful to know where the vehicle has been at, but not to protect any of its contents from being stolen. Nuve goes much farther than that. The company creates custom-built hardware to protect fuel and cargo that can be monitored via web or mobile devices. Their sensors can detect the time and location when the criminal is attempting to steal fuel or to force open a cargo door. A message is sent instantly by Email or SMS to the person in charge of asset protection. Nuve doesn't stop there. They can also install hardware that can activate or deactivate door locks either by GPS coordinates or by customer support representatives and enable/disable ignition. Thus not only giving detailed information about when and where assets are being stolen but also actively stopping the crime.
Since Nuve’s year of foundation in 2009 the company has received over 13 million dollars in funding, has won IBM’s SmartCamp in Mexico; and has managed to get several large customers, such as Pemex (Mexico’s state oil company), AHMSA (Mexico’s largest integrated steel plant) and FEMSA (A large bottling company from Mexico). 95% of Nuve’s business is based in Mexico. This is because of Mexico’s high rate of cargo and fuel theft. Nuve is currently making efforts to expand in the US market.
